My name is Simon and I am a Bath based professional photographer with over 30 years experience in both studio and location work in and around the South west of the UK.
1. Composition
Composition is especially important in urban or city photography as the environment can be chaotic and busy. A well-composed photo can make sense of the chaos, highlight the beauty of the urban landscape, and capture the essence of the city, creating a compelling and memorable image.
2. Light
Natural light is crucial in as it can create mood, depth, and texture in an image. Time of day makes a huge difference in Bath – the play of light and shadow on buildings, streets, and people can transform the scene and give it a unique character, making it more dynamic and engaging.
3. Subject matter
Subject matter is a crucial element of city photography since it determines what the viewer sees and how they engage with the image. The right subject matter can evoke emotions, showcase the beauty of the city, or reveal something new, making the photograph unique and interesting.
4. Storytelling
Does you photo tell a story? Storytelling is an essential aspect of photography, as it allows the photographer to communicate a message, convey emotions, and establish a connection with the viewer. Through storytelling, a photograph can become more memorable and impactful, leaving a lasting impression.
5. Something different!
To do something different in photography, try experimenting with unique angles, perspectives, and compositions. Play with different lighting, focus, and depth of field settings, and consider using props or unusual locations to add an unexpected element to your images. Don’t be afraid to take risks and break the rules to create something truly distinctive.
